Countdown to Black Friday 2026
Days, hours, minutes, and seconds until Black Friday 2026 — the biggest shopping day of the year.
When is Black Friday 2026?
Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November 2026. It is always the Friday immediately after Thanksgiving in the United States — and Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November. In 2026:
- Thanksgiving: Thursday 26 November 2026
- Black Friday: Friday 27 November 2026
- Cyber Monday: Monday 30 November 2026
Many retailers now spread deals across the whole week leading up to Black Friday, so "Black Friday week" is increasingly the norm rather than a single-day event.
Why is it called Black Friday?
There are two competing origin stories, and both probably contributed to the modern name.
The more flattering version is an accounting one: shops traditionally ran at a loss for most of the year — "in the red" — and moved into profit after Thanksgiving when Christmas shopping began. That shift "into the black" gave the day its name. This explanation became widespread in the 1980s when retailers started marketing the day as a positive event.
The older and less flattering version comes from Philadelphia in the 1960s. Police officers there used "Black Friday" to describe the chaos that descended on the city the day after Thanksgiving, when out-of-town shoppers and tourists arrived en masse ahead of the Army–Navy football game held that Saturday. It was a miserable day for police working long shifts through crowds, traffic jams, and petty crime.
The retail industry adopted and reframed the accounting interpretation, which is now the dominant narrative — and which is far better for business.
Black Friday beyond the United States
Black Friday is tied to the US Thanksgiving calendar, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming a global retail event:
- United Kingdom: Black Friday arrived in the UK around 2013 when Amazon UK ran promotions timed to the US date. It is now one of the busiest shopping days of the British retail calendar, both online and in stores.
- Canada: Canada's Thanksgiving is in October, so Black Friday has no local holiday anchor — but the date aligns with American retailers and has been observed as a shopping event for decades. Major Canadian retailers now run competing promotions.
- Australia: Adopted more recently, primarily through online retail. Australian shoppers have embraced it despite the timing sitting in late spring rather than autumn.
- India, Brazil, Europe: Black Friday promotions are now standard across these regions, driven largely by global e-commerce platforms (Amazon, and local equivalents) rather than any cultural link to Thanksgiving.
Shopping tips for Black Friday
- Research prices before the day. Some "Black Friday deals" simply restore items to their regular price after a temporary inflation. Tools that track price history (such as CamelCamelCamel for Amazon) help you verify whether a listed discount is genuine.
- Make a list in advance. Impulse buys account for a significant share of Black Friday spending. Knowing what you actually need — and the price you'd be happy to pay — stops the urgency of countdown timers from doing the work for retailers.
- Compare online vs in-store. Many major retailers now match or beat their in-store prices online, and online stock is typically broader. The main advantage of in-store shopping is immediate gratification; the main disadvantage is the queues.
- Don't forget Cyber Monday. Not everything goes on sale Friday. Technology and electronics deals in particular are often stronger on Cyber Monday (30 November 2026), which was originally focused purely on online shopping.
- Check return policies. Items bought in late November are often intended as Christmas gifts. Make sure the retailer's return window extends past Christmas Day — many standard 30-day policies would expire before you've had a chance to unwrap them.

Frequently asked questions
When is Black Friday 2026?
Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November 2026 — the day after Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday of November in the United States).
Why is it called Black Friday?
The most widely accepted explanation is an accounting reference: shops traditionally ran at a loss (in the red) for much of the year and moved into profit (into the black) once the Christmas shopping season began after Thanksgiving. An older, less flattering origin comes from Philadelphia police, who used the term to describe the post-Thanksgiving chaos of crowds and traffic.
Does Black Friday happen outside the United States?
Yes. The UK, Canada, Australia, India, Brazil, and much of Europe now see significant Black Friday promotions, driven mainly by global online retailers. In Canada and the UK it has no local holiday anchor — it's purely a retail event imported from the US.
What time do Black Friday sales start?
Online sales typically go live at midnight on Friday (or Thursday evening). Physical retailers vary — some open at 5 AM or 6 AM. Many retailers now stretch deals across the entire preceding week, so a single opening time matters less than it used to.
What is Cyber Monday?
Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday — in 2026, that is 30 November. Created in 2005 to encourage online shopping, it has grown into the largest single online-shopping day of the year in the US, often outpacing Black Friday for pure e-commerce volume.
